FAQs

Q: Can you make one for me?
A: I would love to! We would need to discuss a few things first, as we’d be making a contractual commitment (to protect both of us), but the short answer is ‘Yes’.

Q: How long does it take?
A: This depends on several things, such as:

  • how many orders I’m already committed to

  • what time of year it is (certain seasons/holidays are busier than others)

  • how extensive the design request is (single or multiple subjects; level of background details, etc)

A fair estimate, for a single portrait (head only, simple or no background), would be anywhere from 3-8 hours. However, my work/home schedule has to be factored into that, which generally equates to a few days to a week from finalized order to finished project delivery. (Please note this does not include any wait time for customers in the queue before you.)

Q: What do you need from me?
A: A photo or two of the subject you’d like me to illustrate. The better quality photos you provide, the more likely I am to really capture the subjects’ likeness. You’ll also let me know any special requests or ideas you have.

Q: Do you draw things, too? (And is that weird?)
A: I absolutely do! (And it most certainly isn’t.) Material objects often come to hold a special value or sentimental attachment for us. A wedding dress, the view from your honeymoon suite, dad’s prized car, baby’s favorite toy, the shoes you spent an entire paycheck on (or couldn’t justify buying but never stopped drooling over) — I’m happy to draw anything that you want captured in illustrative form.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Again, this depends on a number of factors, but boils down to the scale of a project (i.e., how much time and effort it will take). Due to the variety of designs I offer, prices will vary. A single portrait (head only, simple or no background) will be in the ballpark of $150 and up.

My fees are commensurate with my experience and skill level, and you’re getting a seasoned, professional artist. (See here and here for examples of fair going market rates, to give you an idea.)

Art can be considered a luxury item, and it’s okay if that doesn’t fit your current budget. I am comfortable with my pricing, knowing the many happy customers over the years who have found their JanArt Designs to be well worth their value (some say priceless). If you want something pumped out in a couple hours at rock bottom prices, as Obi-Wan might say, “she isn’t the artist you’re looking for”.

Q: What do I get?
A: This is a great question, and an important, essential element to know about my work. All of the art I create for JanArt Design is digital. That means I don’t deliver any physical goods, rather a file (or files) in electronic format, via email or a download link. In the creation phase, this makes things easier and faster (digital allows for on-the-fly editing and output changes), and delivery is quicker and simpler as well (digital eliminates the additional time and expense of sending physical goods through a mail service).

Q: Do you ever offer discounts?
A: Yes! There isn’t a set schedule for these, but if you join my mailing list (link below) or follow my Instagram account, I’ll let you know when I have any specials running.

Q: How about freebies?
A: Of course. I’m flattered that people are interested, and happy to share some of my personal designs for free. If you look in my Portfolio, there’s a section called Free & Flirty. Everything there is fully downloadable, and free to use for your personal enjoyment. Just make sure to follow our Terms & Conditions (per Licensing Rights, you must credit me as the artist if you post anywhere online, and selling for profit is prohibited.)

Q: What if I don’t like it?
A: I have honestly never had a client walk away unhappy. I truly want you to love what I create for you, and will work hard to make it the best it can be. You will get some sneak peeks at different stages during the process, to make sure it’s meeting your expectations. Plus, several revisions are built into our agreement, so neither of us feels badly when edits are requested.

Q: I’m ready to order! What do I do next?
A: Head over to the Reach Out page, and enter the required info. In the message box, let me know two things up front:
1) When you’re hoping to get this by (your ideal delivery timeframe)
2) The basic scope of the project

Here’s an example:
“I’d like a photo of my sister made into a portrait. She loves coffee and skiing, can we incorporate that somehow? Hoping I could get it before her birthday this year, which is August 19th.”

Feel free to add any other details or questions you have, then hit “Submit”.

Once I receive your request, I’ll get back to you within 24 hours. You’ll share your photo(s) and ideas, and we’ll communicate to iron out the details — which will likely involve a few back and forths. If agreeable, you’ll sign on the dotted line and send a deposit*. We’ll do this through email, so all the details will be available in writing for easy reference.

Then the fun starts! I’ll be in touch throughout the designing phase to make sure you’re pleased. And before you know it, a special delivery will show up in your inbox — yours to treasure forever. 😊
